Alternative, or Complementary Medicine is fairly under-developed and not widely accepted in Sweden although more and more people are deviating from the norm. In a country where professions such as engineering, science and research, particularly medical research, are cornerstones of the labour market, you won’t as much support for anything unconventional.
Saying that, Swedish Massage has international acclaim and the growth of Axelssons which started off as a Stockholm-based massage school and now claims to offer the greatest range of alternative and complimentary medicine courses in the entire Nordic region, shows that there is in fact both a long history and a lot of growth in this area.
The Everything for Health exhibition held in Stockholm each year also reflects the growing interest in the alternatives to what is known in Swedish as “school medicine”. The exhibition gives people an opportunity to find out and even test alternative medicine and therapies.
It is also quite common for people to consult osteopaths etc.
